Some Past Sketches - Catsburg, Jock Road, Asheville

Catsburg Country Store Watercolor.JPG

I sketch on and off, sometimes going months without doing it.  Here are several sketches from back in 2011.  My favorite is the old Catsburg store, here with the photo, for reference and posterity.  Our oldest son and I used to explore the area north of Durham when he was little (he’s over 30 now!). This store was a favorite find of that time, when it was still operating, and we went in for snacks. Once I’ve sketched something I feel like it’s inside me, like I ate it; it’s mine. The Catsburg store was a particularly delicious artistic morsel. The hand lettering and cat sign might be my favorite things about this storefront, but there is so much to love. I deeply wish it were still open, unchanged from the way it was when we discovered it in the 1990’s.

The other sketches in this post are of the Botanical Gardens near UNC-Asheville (the bridge), and of the slave quarters on Jock Road (part of the Stagville state historic site north of Durham, NC).
