Caribou Landscape
This started as a random heap of blind contour drawings from two totally unrelated photographs. One was a photo of some very young but very tough looking muddy soccer players of both genders, the other was a shot of two women struggling to stow a large sail at the base of a mast. Looking at the resulting tangle of lines, I saw the landscape gradually emerge, but the bottom quarter remained a mystery. Then I looked through a scrap book of old photos and drawings that I keep for inspiration and there was the caribou. I turned to the pen scribble and it was there, too - almost perfect. The nose, the placement of the eye, the ear, the start of the antlers… So this is the result. A recent NC mountains vacation put the landscape shapes into my head - clouds over the land in the distance, blue water, trees covering part of a mountainside and receding into the background, small squalls, dark birds flying together.
